There doesn't seem to be much going on around ICR, is everybody still alive?
Anyway, changed around some of my songs...
Still anticipating the release of my fifth CD, it is a bit delayed in mixing right now, but I'm still planning on having it out in the next month or so. |

Christmas is less than two weeks away and still no one has guessed my Christmas entry...actually, no one other than our admin has yet tried (that I'm aware of). Give a listen to Pastures and give me a guess. |

My Christmas entry

I'v put up my Christmas song entry...Pastrues: Part III. I've writeen a handful of Christmas arrangements, and even one song, but have not recorded any and don't have the time to do it right now...so my entry will probaly sound pretty atypical (I don't expect to win)...however, I will send a free copy of one of my cds to the first person with a good enough ear to find the Christmas theme in the piece.
In other news..."And the seedling became dust..." is in final mixdown phase. I've heard a few of the tracks as they stand now and am really excited about the release. |

Anecdotes Part IV: Sarcasms, Mutterings, and Otherwise Lonely Tales

Some new songs are up.
This is the final installment of introductions to my albums. Sarcasms, Mutterings, and Otherwise Lonely Tales is sort of my experimental album, dominated by two “older” songs dating back to a focused interest in progressive rock a few years back. The song list is as follows:
1 Self-Portrait
2 Song For You
3 Pastures
4 Modify
5 Words
6 Another Good Man Falls
7 Stomping Grounds
Admittedly, Self-Portrait was an odd experience in recording, I had written it intending it to be sung, but never was content with any melody for it. So I set up a 12 note chord on the keyboard and left it spoken word…but…I discovered, by the time I recorded it, it was no longer an accurate portrait. Perhaps that is why some artist re-paint themselves countless times…I will have to consider a future self-portrait.
Song For You was a joke written for a friend who kept asking for a song…actually the same friend for whom I wrote The Seventh Day on Impression: Time.
Pastures is one of those two songs referenced above. And also unique in my repertoire in that it has been rewritten over and over, and I am still not convinced it is finished. It is done in seven parts only two of which (2 and 6) are lyrical. These are bookended by the main theme in Intro and Outro form. The central three movements are instrumental landscapes, recounting the happenings in the pasture between the sheep and the wolves. At one time they were individually titled, but much like many of my favorite composers I’ve found titles tend to detract from the music, so they were dropped.
Modify is one of my three most important songs. It deals with the role of the Christian songwriter as both a Christian and an artist.
Words is lonely, searching, and sort of reconsiders some of the remaining sentiments from The Saddest Smile days.
Another Good Man Falls was written on a lonely Fourth of July in Ohio, looking out from my apartment balcony at the fireworks through the tree branches, guitar in hand. It is possibly the strongest song in this collection.
Stomping Grounds is that other old prog rock song. I goes back quite a long time, basically unchanged. It also is great fun to play live. When I used to play the open mics at the bars in Dayton I would try to get an early slot (I really hate playing for drunk people) but when I had later slots I would struggle to get anyone to listen as folk style acoustic doesn’t carry amidst the noise of a crowded bar. So I would play Stomping Grounds much to the chagrine of the sound man who in no way expected me to start yelling into the microphone.
